Five Historic Gambling Venues That May Not Exist in 20 Years
Some of the world's most legendary casinos are facing growing pressure from redevelopment, changing tourism, and modern megaresorts. Discover five historic gambling destinations that deserve a spot on every gambler's travel bucket list before they lose the character that made them famous.

Casinos have a timeless quality. The marble on the floor may be decades old, but it always shines just as brightly; the chandeliers gleam and flicker like they always did; and the roulette wheel will spin forever, regardless of what goes on out in the real world.
Yet, in my journeys to the planet’s best-known casinos and deep into the archives of their storied pasts, I’ve learned that even the legendary gambling halls of legend cannot escape the inexorable forces of change.
Pressure for money, changes in patterns of tourism, tightened regulatory oversight, and a desire to create the largest integrated resorts are rapidly redefining the business. If you want to experience the rich history of gambling firsthand, I advise you to do so soon.
Why Historic Gambling Venues Disappear
For many of us, we picture scandal or bankruptcy when we think of legendary casinos fading away. The truth is their biggest nemesis is often not as sexy: renovation.
The modern casino patron looks for a luxury resort including hotels, high-end restaurants and dining at a Michelin level, concert halls, shopping centers, and even day spas and electronic games. These traditional gambling establishments, iconic or not, simply don’t stack up against a massive, billion-dollar casino and hotel resort that keeps patrons entertained 24/7.
Redevelopment also contributes. Prime property is simply too valuable to leave to linger. Old buildings cost money to maintain; existing structures cost a fortune to protect, and developers often see greater value in rebuilding than restoring.
Then there’s the way gamblers behave.
These days younger gamblers may spend at least as much on the entertainment, nightlife, and socializing as on games. Cashless gaming, mobile betting, and new digital technology have turned traditional casino-going on its head.
This doesn’t mean the historic casinos are doomed, of course, and doesn't necessarily mean historic venues will close. Many will survive - but perhaps only in name, with little of their original character left intact.
Five Historic Gambling Venues Worth Visiting While You Still Can

Casino de Monte-Carlo, Monaco
If there is one casino that represents old-world glamour, it's the Casino de Monte-Carlo. Opened in 1863, it helped transform Monaco from a struggling principality into one of Europe's wealthiest destinations.
Strolling through the area with its lovely Belle Époque architecture makes you feel as if you’ve stepped into a film set. Actually, that is precisely what James Bond did.
Monte Carlo is under constant pressure to find ways to balance its luxury tourism industry. Even as visitors’ expectations get higher, the area has gotten much more developed in recent years. The main goal is not survival but protecting the unique character of the area at the same time.
Binion's Gambling Hall, Las Vegas
Few casinos have influenced gambling quite like Binion's.
Opened in 1951, it revolutionized downtown Las Vegas by introducing high betting limits, generous comps, and eventually hosting the first World Series of Poker in 1970.
Although the casino remains open, its importance has diminished dramatically since poker's biggest event moved to the Las Vegas Strip. Fremont Street has experienced a revival, but the center of gravity for Las Vegas tourism continues shifting toward newer megaresorts.
I often think about whether people that are visiting this place in the future would regard Binion's as a thing in gambling history or as just one of the many other historic buildings surrounding many new attractions.
Casino Lisboa, Macau

Before Macau became the world's largest gambling market, there was the Hotel Lisboa.
Opened in 1970, its instantly recognizable architecture became synonymous with casino gaming across Asia. For decades, it dominated Macau's gambling industry under the legendary Stanley Ho.
Today, however, Macau has transformed. Massive integrated resorts featuring luxury retail, family attractions, convention centers, and world-class entertainment increasingly define the city's appeal.
Casino Lisboa still holds tremendous historical significance, but competing against billion-dollar developments makes preserving its traditional identity an ongoing challenge.
Kurhaus Casino Baden-Baden, Germany
Few casinos can rival the elegance of Baden-Baden.
The casino opened in the early 1800s inside the magnificent Kurhaus and has welcomed royalty, aristocrats, and literary legends, including Fyodor Dostoevsky, who famously drew inspiration from his gambling experiences for The Gambler.
Its greatest strength, its historic atmosphere, is also its greatest challenge. Maintaining centuries-old architecture is expensive, while modern casino customers increasingly expect technology, convenience, and entertainment options that extend well beyond gaming.
The venue remains one of Europe's finest casinos, but preserving authenticity in a rapidly changing industry won't become any easier.
Casino di Venezia, Italy
Casino di Venezia, which claims the title of the oldest casino in the world, was founded in 1638. The casino is located near Venice's Grand Canal, in the beautiful Ca' Vendramin Calergi Palace.
The casino is known to provide nearly 400 years of history in gaming; however, it must face the multitude of problems that Venice has to deal with, such as overtourism, problems with the environment, and the reduction in the population.
I found it remarkable that a casino older than many countries still operates today, but history alone isn't always enough to guarantee the future.
Historic Gambling Venues Facing Uncertain Futures
| Venue | Opened | Why It's Historic | Primary Challenge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Casino di Venezia | 1638 | World's oldest operating casino | Tourism pressures and preservation costs |
| Casino de Monte-Carlo | 1863 | Symbol of European luxury gambling | Balancing heritage with modernization |
| Kurhaus Casino Baden-Baden | 1824 | Historic European spa casino | Aging infrastructure and changing visitor expectations |
| Casino Lisboa | 1970 | Foundation of modern Macau gaming | Competition from integrated megaresorts |
| Binion's Gambling Hall | 1951 | Birthplace of the World Series of Poker | Declining prominence outside the Las Vegas Strip |
Why These Places Still Matter
Historical casinos present a unique advantage that is impossible to replicate in other billion-dollar casinos - they provide authenticity.
These places were spectators of the birth of gambling as we know it today. They hosted legendary players in poker, welcomed kings and queens, gave birth to stories that were written in books, and set trends for the design of casinos.
Even before the era of fountain shows, celebrity chefs’ restaurants, or esports arenas, these casinos earned their respect and reputation with the help of ambience, architecture, and amazing gambling experiences.
According to gaming history lovers, these places are like museums.
What Will Replace Them?
The casino of the future will be very different from what we are accustomed to now.
Integrated resorts are becoming more popular in several parts of the world because they offer complete holiday experiences instead of just casinos. When it comes to technology, we have cashless payments, digital loyalty programs, artificial intelligence, customized gaming, and easier transitions from online to offline gaming.
Finally, the casino of tomorrow will focus on entertainment rather than gambling. In this “new” casino, there will be concert halls, restaurants, shopping, and other facilities besides traditional gambling games.
Final Thoughts
History rarely disappears overnight.
Most times, it just slowly transforms into something that by the end we’re barely noticing the original even existed in the first place. And that, I predict, is the fate for many of the most famous casinos in the world today.
Some will get a face-lift.
Others will expand.
Some may even get lost entirely.
Even the ones that survive could find much of the soul that made them so magical long gone. If you are one of those people who love to visit places with real stories to tell, then I urge you to make these casinos a top priority on your travel plans.
In 20 years, they might still be around, but they probably won’t even feel like the same historic game-changers they were originally intended to be.
