What to Do Before You Travel With Betting Apps

A little preparation can save you from blocked access and login errors. Knowing how sportsbooks track location helps you stay ahead of the most common problems.

US betting apps don’t always travel well. Chances are, the moment you step outside state lines, or even get a bit too close to them, the platform cuts off access and starts showing block messages instead. This, of course, depends on where you’re going. Moving around within the country or heading abroad puts you in a completely different setup altogether.

This article breaks it all down. I’ll walk through the different scenarios, cover the legal side, and break down how geolocation works, along with whether or not VPNs can be a solution. By the end, you’ll know exactly what is and is not on the table if you want to keep betting online while traveling.

Why betting apps stop working

The reason US sports betting sites and apps might stop working when you travel is that operators must follow state-by-state licenses tied to your physical location. What matters is where you are at that moment, not where you signed up.

Each jurisdiction regulates and taxes gambling independently. Therefore, bets on those apps have to be placed from within a state where the operator is licensed and permitted to accept them. To enforce that, they rely on geolocation technologies such as GPS, Wi-Fi triangulation, and IP address checks, often combined with anti-spoofing controls.

Traveling internationally is a different situation altogether. In most cases, U.S. betting apps stop accepting wagers, even in countries where the same operator holds a local license. Based on confirmations from support teams at BetMGM, this comes down to internal policy. Operators keep U.S. accounts restricted to their original jurisdiction to avoid breaching state-specific licensing conditions and compliance boundaries.

How geolocation works (and why it’s strict)

Geolocation is what betting operators use to figure out where you are. Apps have this built in through embedded tools from providers like GeoComply, while accessing a site through a browser will often prompt you to install a small verification plugin to enable the same checks.

Here is what happens every time you try to log in or place a bet:

  • The system starts by pulling GPS data from your device, giving a precise latitude and longitude when available.
  • Nearby Wi-Fi networks get scanned and matched against a database of known router locations to estimate your position.
  • Your IP address provides a network-level view of where the connection originates.
  • All signals are then compared to confirm they point to the same place.
  • That combined position is checked against approved state or country boundaries set by the operator’s license.
  • Anti-spoofing tools operate in parallel, actively flagging VPNs, fake GPS apps, or remote desktop setups.

US gambling operators take geolocation seriously because their licenses require them to verify that every wager is placed from within approved state lines. They also have to maintain auditable location records and perform checks in near real time, not just at login. Any slip, even a gap in the system that lets someone bypass restrictions with a VPN or spoofed GPS, can lead to major fines, like what happened with DraftKings in New Jersey back in 2022. Other cases could also see license suspension or loss of access to that market altogether.

If you are close to a state border, even slight GPS drift or mismatched Wi-Fi and IP signals can push your device over the line. Most apps would rather block access than risk a compliance breach. You will see the same behavior on weak or unstable connections, where the system cannot reliably verify your location.

The different traveling scenarios

Again, whether your NBA bets or soccer bets go through while traveling really comes down to where you’re heading. Let me explain in more detail.

Domestic travel

Most betting apps in the US will continue working if:

  1. The state you’re heading to allows online gambling.
  2. The operator in question is licensed to operate there.

What you’ll often have to do at login is manually pick your current jurisdiction. Of course, the exact setup can vary from one app to another, and you might notice differences from state to state in promotions or what is actually available.

Let me give you a more specific example using DraftKings:

  • New Jersey to Colorado: Betting should work because both states allow it, and DraftKings is licensed in each.
  • Colorado to Utah: You cannot place a bet. Utah does not permit sports betting under its state laws.
  • Colorado to Florida: Even though Florida online sports betting is legal, wagering will not work because DraftKings has no active operation there.

International travel

Traveling abroad often means losing access to your US betting app. When you try to log in, you’ll usually get a “country not supported” message or something along those lines.

Signing up with the same brand, or even a different one licensed there, is not always an option since most require a local residential address. Even if you try using a hotel or temporary stay, you usually hit a wall at identity checks, often before any withdrawal goes through.

The only reliable workaround is going to a physical betting shop and placing wagers the old-fashioned way. And yes, I know about VPNs and proxies, but they are not a viable route here. I’ll get into that further down below.

Access methods vs risk level

The table below sums up the scenarios above, along with a few key takeaways.

MethodWorks?Notes
Legal state loginYesFully compliant when using legal sports betting sites
Traveling within legal statesSometimesDepends on the location and whether the operator is licensed there
International accessRarelyOften blocked by the operator
VPN usageNot recommendedViolates terms — risk of getting your account blocked
Border areasInconsistentCommon issues may arise, depending on how accurate the geolocation software is

VPNs and Proxies — what they do vs reality

VPNs and proxies both act as intermediaries that route your internet traffic through another server, so websites see that location instead of your real one. People use them for all sorts of reasons, including:

  • Protecting privacy on public Wi-Fi. This is often paired with using incognito mode to avoid leaving browsing data on the device
  • Securing sensitive data through encryption, especially when accessing banking or work systems remotely.
  • Bypassing local network restrictions, such as blocks on certain networks or controlled environments.
  • Avoiding tracking from advertisers, websites, or internet service providers.
  • Getting around location-based restrictions.

That last one probably raises the obvious question: why not just route your connection through your home state with a VPN and have the app treat you as if you are still there?

Technically, it’s possible, but sportsbook operators use dedicated detection tools designed to spot that exact behavior and block access straight away. Even if you are physically in New Jersey and route your connection through a New Jersey VPN, the app will still block the wager.

The reason is that even if you are trying to access the same market you would have back home, others could use that method to connect from states or countries where the operator is not licensed.

What you should actually do

Alright, now for the part you’re really here for. What should you do before traveling if you want to keep betting on your favorite sports without issues? Here are my recommendations when staying within the US:

  • Check whether your destination state allows online sports betting. Then, go to the sportsbook’s website and confirm they are licensed in that state. Unsure? Reach out to customer support via live chat or phone.
  • Download or switch to the correct state version of the app once you arrive.
  • Close any VPN or proxy tools completely before logging in. Even in the background, they can block access.
  • Stick to mobile data if the app struggles to verify your position.
  • Check payment methods available in that jurisdiction; some options do not carry over.
  • Update your app and device software. Older versions can trigger location errors.
  • Withdraw any balance before traveling, so if the account gets temporarily restricted, funds are not left stuck in the account.
  • Keep identity documents handy. Customer support may ask for quick verification if something flags.

If you are traveling abroad, it’s best not to try accessing your existing account, especially through a VPN or any method that attempts to bypass regional restrictions. Instead, you can learn a few basic phrases in the local language and place bets in person at a licensed betting shop.

Final thoughts on staying logged into your betting sites while traveling

Whether you can stay logged into betting sites while traveling mostly comes down to where you’re going and if that platform is authorized to operate there.

Apps can only accept wagers from people physically inside the areas they are licensed for. To enforce that, they check your device’s position through geolocation tools. Trying to get around it with a VPN or proxy usually does not work and can lead to temporary account restrictions, sometimes even suspension.

The best approach is to understand the rules and double-check the sportsbook’s policy before you travel. Most of the time, moving between legal US betting states is fine, as long as that operator holds a license there. If it does not, the app simply will not accept bets. Going abroad is where things usually break down, and at that point, using a licensed betting shop in person is often the safest option.
