Forget automobiles. We're talking planes and trains today! Amtrak carried a record 34.5 million passengers in fiscal 2025, up 5% from the year before, with ticket revenue climbing 10% to $2.7 billion. It's also mid-rollout on NextGen Acela, faster trains with 27% more seats per trainset now running the Northeast Corridor. Rail is having a real moment.

Trains don't make flying obsolete, though. Airlines still win plenty of trips outright, and pretending otherwise does readers no favors. Here's my honest look at where each mode actually wins, with real numbers instead of vibes.

The Case for the Train

Train travel skips almost every hassle baked into flying. No security line, no boarding groups, no last-minute gate shuffling (though tracks can change for railroad rides). You walk in, find a seat, and go. Stations sit in city centers, so there's no separate trip to an airport 20 miles outside the downtown area.

The seats themselves are bigger. Acela's seat pitch runs 42 inches across the board, roughly 8 to 14 inches more than a typical economy airline seat. Most routes include free WiFi and power outlets at every seat, and you can get up and walk to a cafe car whenever you want.

Then there's the emissions gap, which is larger than most people assume. The Case for the Plane

Speed is the plane's whole argument, and it's a strong one. A one-hour flight can cover the same distance a train would take half a day to cover. For anything cross-country, there's no rail alternative that competes.

Coverage is the bigger issue. Outside the Northeast Corridor, Amtrak's network thins out fast, and where it does exist, it's often slow. That's a track ownership problem as much as anything else. Amtrak owns only about 100 miles of track, mostly within the Northeast Corridor. Amtrak has no direct route at all, only a multi-leg trip that runs upward of 67 hours with a connection in Chicago. That's not a knock on the train experience. Some travelers genuinely want the multi-day trip as the point of the journey (I, for one, would crush so many beefy fantasy books in that time). Still, it's not a substitute for a flight when the goal is simply getting from one coast to the other.

Here's where the honest comparison gets more interesting than either side's fans want to admit. Amtrak's system-wide on-time performance sat around 75% in the second quarter of 2025. Major U.S. airlines averaged about 76.4% on time across all of 2025, down slightly from 78% the year before. Those numbers are close enough to call it a wash.

On this specific route, the train wins on nearly everything except raw airborne speed, and once you count the actual door-to-door trip, the train usually wins on total time too. That's a big part of why the Northeast Corridor is where Amtrak's ridership growth is concentrated among travelers hunting a good fare and an easy trip.

Which One Actually Wins?

Neither, universally. If you're going more than a few hundred miles, or somewhere rail doesn't reach at all, flying is still the only realistic option, freight interference and all. If you're moving between two cities on a well-served rail corridor, particularly the Northeast, the train usually wins on total door-to-door time, comfort, and cost, without the pre-flight ritual of arriving two hours early and shuffling through security.

The honest answer is to run the comparison for your specific trip instead of picking a side in advance. Check the actual door-to-door time, not just the time in the air or on the rails, and let the route decide instead of the mode.
