Why Does Everybody Hate Us? Top 10 Most Hated Sports Teams Ever
Some teams always win; others get caught breaking the rules. Either extreme is a surefire way to become universally hated, as these 10 sports teams can attest to.

One thing is for certain when it comes to sports: success may be infectious and a catalyst for franchises to build huge international fanbases, but it doesn’t always make everybody else want to hate you.
In fact, you don't even need to be the best team in the league to find yourselves on the wrong side of popular opinion as fed-up fans quickly turn against you. From the utterly smug to the downright scandalous, here's a countdown of the 10 biggest sporting hate magnets.
The 10 Most Hated Clubs Globally
Most Hated Teams Breakdown
| Rank | Team | Sport | Reason for the Hate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | New York Yankees | Baseball | A century of big spending and non-stop winning |
| 2 | Dallas Cowboys | American football | “America’s Team” hype, decades of disappointment |
| 3 | Real Madrid | Soccer | Trophy dominance and superstar spending |
| 4 | Manchester City | Soccer | Relentless success and financial-rule allegations |
| 5 | Houston Astros | Baseball | Sign-stealing scandal and insincere apologies |
| 6 | LA Lakers | Basketball | Endless dominance combined with Hollywood glamour |
| 7 | Duke Blue Devils | Basketball | Perceived elitism and endless media attention |
| 8 | Red Bull Racing | Formula 1 | Cost-cap breach paired with ruthless winning mentality |
| 9 | Vegas Golden Knights | Ice hockey | Instant success while rivals waited decades |
| 10 | UConn Women’s Basketball | Basketball | Relentless dominance and championship fatigue |

10. UConn Women's Basketball
When it comes to powerhouse teams in women's college basketball, few have managed to rival the Huskies in terms of generating league-wide resentment fuelled by their relentless dominance of the national championships over the years.
Having arguably created one of the greatest sporting dynasties ever - epitomized by winning 11 NCAA titles in just 22 seasons between 1995 and 2016 - you can see why fans across the league could perhaps be forgiven for suffering a little bit of UConn fatigue.

9. Vegas Golden Knights
You'll likely get a two-word expletive if you asked any long-suffering Sabers or Canucks fan about the emotional rollercoaster of supporting an NHL team where it seems no amount of playoff appearances will ever bring them success.
Hence why the Vegas Golden Knights have rocketed up the rankings to becoming the newest members on the shortlist of hated teams after their inaugural season in 2017-18 saw them head straight to the Stanley Cup Final. While they lost their first encounter, they managed to clinch the championship on their second visit in 2023, much to the dismay of the 10 other championship-starved teams who have never achieved the feat.

8. Red Bull Racing
F1 is another sport in which teams can rub other fans up the wrong way with a startling amount of ease. Most of the time it's the continued success of one team or another as they dominate the Formula 1 championship year after year, but in Red Bull Racing's case, there's more to it than that.
Plagued with an endless string of controversies, from its bitter feuds with rival teams, their ruthless treatment of drivers, or a breach of cost-cap rules to the tune of over $2.3 million, Red Bull Racing's unforgiving approach to winning has always ruffled opposing fans' feathers up and down the paddock.

7. Duke Blue Devils
Far from being the most successful team in college basketball history, Duke University has seemingly made themselves perennial favorites when it comes to drawing the collective ire of opposing teams' fans across the league for a multitude of reasons.
Perhaps at the forefront of the animosity towards the Cameron Crazies is the perceived upscale elitism of the private academic institution, which has helped perpetuate a sense of arrogance and superiority over rival schools. Outside factors have also helped elevate the dislike of the Blue Devils, such as the disproportionate amount of media coverage they receive in comparison to other college programs.

6. LA Lakers
Dynasties don't get much bigger in the NBA than with the Lakers and the Celtics, yet it's Los Angeles that tends to find itself at the top of the charts when it comes to getting under rival fans' skin. From the original Showtime era of the 70s and 80s led by the likes of Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, to their four-decade NBA dominance under Shaq, Kobe, and most recently, LeBron.
Despite being supported by many of Hollywood's elite, it would be safe to assume that the Lakers' wildly successful ascendancy over the years is the primary catalyst for the hostile reception they receive from rival fans across the NBA whenever they are in town.

5. Houston Astros
Now, when it comes to the Houston Astros, their inclusion as one of the most hated teams in sporting history is less about championship-winning envy and more akin to their sign-stealing exploits during the 2017 season, which helped them secure a World Series championship that same year.
At the heart of the controversy was Houston's decoding of opposing catchers' signals in real time via a video monitor, which was subsequently relayed to batters via the banging of signals out on a trash can. Whereas the mechanics of its campaign of cheating may have temporarily damaged the Astros' reputation, it was the continued string of botched apologies and a distinct lack of remorse that has now etched the scandal permanently into their identity.

4. Manchester City
As Premier League rags-to-riches stories go, you’d think Manchester City would have most soccer fans onside having risen from the bottom tier of the football league to win eight EPL titles in the last 15 seasons. Nevertheless, it seemed inevitable that fans would eventually start to resent City’s success, even with managerial maestro Pep Guardiola at the helm.
However, the news that the Premier League declared that the Sky Blues did so by breaching strict financial rules has given opposing fans all the ammunition they need to hate City even more. No doubt, there won’t be any tears shed outside of Manchester should the league strip them of their titles, nor should they be relegated back down to the lower leagues as punishment - albeit unlikely.

3. Real Madrid
What can one say about Real Madrid’s record-breaking achievements on the pitch? With 36 La Liga titles and an unprecedented 15 European Cup/ Champions League trophies in its 124-year history - if that isn’t a formula for animosity, then we’re not sure what is.
Granted, as the richest soccer club in the world, it’s not just Real Madrid’s success that drives rival fans mad, but it’s the club’s mantra of attempting to sign all the best players in the world under its Galácticos policy, too. With global revenues hitting $1.27 billion and a club valuation of $9.5 billion… they may be rich, but it seems they can’t buy everyone’s affection.

2. Dallas Cowboys
Okay, so branding yourself “America’s Team” was always going to fast-track the Dallas Cowboys to league-wide resentment. However, as provocative as the nickname may be, it perhaps reflected the team’s early success, having won five of the first 30 Super Bowls, as well as becoming a nationwide staple for Thanksgiving football.
Remarkably, having not featured in any of the 30 Super Bowls since they last won it, the Cowboys remain the biggest and most valuable franchise in the NFL, under polarizing owner Jerry Jones. Furthermore, in spite of their calamitous Super Bowl form, Dallas remains a perennial table topper when it comes to the most hated team in the NFL, drawing in 21% of the vote in a 2025 Hard Rock Bet survey.

1. New York Yankees
Peaking at number one in the all-time hit list of the most despised sports teams are the big-spending, serial-winning MLB protagonists, the New York Yankees, who have always embraced the animosity garnered from fans across the league. Although their fans will argue it is a fair price to pay for being the most successful franchise in MLB history.
Some say the pinstripes alone are enough to hate the Yankees, while others claim it’s the arrogant swagger they always exude, or just the fact that they’re from New York. So widespread is the anti-Yankees sentiment that a recent poll by fantasy sports platform RotoWire found they topped the charts in 13 states, five clear of any other team - an impressive feat given the diverse rivalries elsewhere in the league.

Is Being Hated a Badge of Honor and Who is the Next Team Everyone Will Love to Hate?
For sure, being the richest and/ or the most successful team in any league will undoubtedly make you unpopular with other fanbases across the world, but as the Astros have proven, that’s not the only deciding factor.
However, as the Vegas Golden Knights have already demonstrated, it doesn’t matter how new a franchise you are - the tide of public opinion can rapidly turn against you.
In this sense, plausibly, Inter Miami may already have the perfect ingredients to mount a charge to join the list of the most hated sports teams in America’s increasingly popular MLS. With the likes of Lionel Messi and David Beckham in the mix, and having already won both the MLS Cup and Supporters’ Shield, repeat that feat again in 2026, and don’t be surprised if neutral fans also start to root against them.
