Is This the Biggest Acquisition Era in Sports Betting History?
Sportsbooks, prediction markets, and sweepstakes apps are fighting for the same customers. We compared 11 welcome offers to see who's offering the biggest incentives.

New players opening a betting app this week will see a pitch that, for those of us who have been using the platforms for a while, feels familiar: sign up, put a few dollars down, collect more. DraftKings will credit $150 in bonus bets for a $5 wager. Kalshi gives $25 in trading credit for $25 traded. A sweepstakes app hands over coins before you spend anything. The pitches differ, but the target is one fan, and everybody wants that fan while the NFL season is young.
Are we in the midst of the most aggressive acquisition push in the history of legal sports betting? Possibly, though not for the reason you'd guess.
Everyone Is Fighting for the Same Customer
When the Supreme Court struck down PASPA in 2018, the race was simple: state-licensed sportsbooks against each other, one launch at a time. Today the market is far bigger. The American Gaming Association reports $16.89 billion in commercial sports betting revenue in 2025, up 22.6%, and the fan who generates it is now pitched by four kinds of operators: traditional sportsbooks, prediction markets, sweepstakes sportsbooks, and exchange hybrids that blur the lines between them.

The 2026 Welcome Bonus War
The table below shows what each platform advertised as of October 12, 2026. Offers and footprints change quickly. Note that most bonus bets expire in about a week and can't be withdrawn.
| Platform | Type | New-Player Offer | Where Available |
|---|---|---|---|
| DraftKings | Sportsbook | Bet $5, get $150 in bonus bets (six $25 bets over 14 days) | 27 states + D.C. (non-prediction market product) |
| BetMGM | Sportsbook | Up to $1,500 in bonus bets if first bet loses; $150 version in MI, NJ, PA, WV | $1,500 offer in 16 states + D.C. |
| FanDuel | Sportsbook | Bet $5 a day for five days, get $50 in bonus bets daily ($250) | 23 states + D.C. (non-prediction market product) |
| bet365 | Sportsbook | Bet $10, get $200 in bonus bets ($150 in IL, TN) | 17 states |
| Caesars | Sportsbook | Bet $1, get 10 profit boosts ($25 max stake each) | 22 states + D.C. |
| Kalshi | Prediction market | Trade $25, get $25 in trading credit | Most states; blocked in Nevada |
| Polymarket | Prediction market | Deposit $10, get $25 bonus | 40-plus states |
| ProphetX | Prediction market/exchange | Trade $50, get $75 in three $25 installments | All states but Nevada |
| Fliff | Sweepstakes | Up to $250 in free play, matched to first purchase | Most states; not NY or WA |
| Rebet | Sweepstakes | 100% deposit match up to $100 in Rebet Cash | About 44 states |
The biggest number belongs to BetMGM, and you only collect it by losing your first bet. DraftKings, FanDuel, and Fanatics spread their money over days of activity, which turns a sign-up bonus into a habit. Kalshi's $25 looks modest, but it comes with the widest net. DraftKings can offer its deal in 27 states plus D.C. Prediction markets such as Kalshi reach nearly the whole map, because they operate under a federal framework rather than state sportsbook licenses.
That reach has limits. Nevada's governor announced in July that regulators reached an agreement to stop Kalshi's sports prediction market business in the state, and a federal appeals court sided with Nevada in August. The AGA counts 16 states that took action against sports event contracts in 2025.

The Bonus Menu Goes Beyond Bonus Bets
A welcome bonus is just the beginning. Once you sign up and continue betting, sportsbooks and similar platforms can continue doling out promotions. Caesars leans on profit boosts. Fanatics pays in FanCash, a store-credit currency. Fliff and Rebet match deposits in virtual currency. Prediction apps hand out trading credits. All of it is built to get a first bet on the board and a second one right behind it, and the best of the sportsbook promo codes are judged on those terms, not on the headline figure.
The Celebrity Arms Race
Star power is the other weapon. Sydney Sweeney took an equity stake in Novig, a sports-only prediction market platform valued at roughly $500 million, and helped shape its "Just Sports" ad. Her Instagram post drew more than 1.2 million likes. Polymarket, valued above $20 billion, posted a star-studded spot a day earlier with LeBron James, Derek Jeter, and Eli Manning that pulled fewer than 55,000, and James reportedly earns $15 million a year from the partnership. Bodog's look at the prediction market celebrity arms race has more of the roster.

Why Is Everyone Spending Now?
Four forces collide. The legal market is mature, so growth now means aggressively seeking to take over an opponent’s share. Prediction markets let new entrants reach states that never legalized sportsbooks. Sweepstakes apps offer another path where licenses are scarce. And the incumbents are defending turf: DraftKings expects to invest $200 million to $300 million in prediction-related initiatives in 2026, spanning marketing, technology, and customer acquisition. Add the NFL, which hands every operator a captive audience every Sunday, and the sign-up window is wide open.
Is This Really the Biggest Acquisition Era Ever?
On raw dollars, the case is shaky. Executives on DraftKings' first-quarter call said customer acquisition at scale is no longer the name of the game, and the company reported that acquisition costs for prediction products fell more than 80% once they moved into its main app. The post-PASPA scramble, with new states opening one after another, was a land grab with a finish line.
The better case for 2026 is breadth. More types of companies than ever are chasing the same customer, with more promotional structures and more ways to reach someone in a state where a traditional sportsbook can't operate. Is it a great time to be a customer everyone wants? For sign-up value, probably. For legal clarity, check back once the courts finish arguing. Two federal appeals courts have already split on whether states can regulate Kalshi, and the scrutiny of prediction market ads is only growing.
