Why 'Bet $5, Get $200' Isn't Free Money
Sportsbooks make “Bet $5, Get $200” sound like an easy payday, but bonus bets come with expiration dates, restrictions and payout rules that make that $200 worth less than it appears.

Sign up for a sportsbook, and you're likely to see a welcome offer like "bet $5, get $200" or similar. It sounds like a sportsbook accidentally left the vault open and you're about to collect some cash. That's not the whole story.
The $200 in promotional betting credit is real, but almost nothing about how it shows up, how it pays out, or how long you have to use it matches what a casual bettor might assume. In short, you're not getting $200 in free money just for placing a $5+ first bet. It's far more complex than that. Understanding the actual mechanics turns bonus bets or sportsbook credits into a genuinely useful discount and a chance at some real winnings.

What Is a "Bonus Bet," Actually?
The first surprise is that $200 rarely arrives as a $200 lump sum. DraftKings, for instance, splits its version into eight separate $25 bonus bet tokens, distributed in batches/tokens over time, depending on specific promo terms. Each token expires roughly a week after it lands in your account. If you forget about a batch, they'll disappear unused.
The second surprise is bigger. When you use bonus bets on a wager, you don't get your stake back if you win. In other words, say you bet a $25 token on a -110 spread and win. You collect the $22.73 in profit, not the $25 token itself. That distinction sounds small until you're comparing it to a regular cash wager, where a win returns your original stake plus profit. A bonus bet only returns the upside.
Books also differ on what you need to do to unlock the bonus. DraftKings pays out the $200 in tokens regardless of whether your initial $5 wager wins or loses, as long as it clears a minimum odds threshold. FanDuel's comparable offer requires that first bet to actually win before any bonus bets show up. The promised bonus is the same, but FanDuel's fine print makes it inherently harder to actually claim.
Playthrough, the Part That Actually Favors You
This is the part of the fine print that's genuinely good news, and it's also the part most explainers skip. A bonus bet doesn't come with a rollover multiplier. It carries a 1x playthrough, meaning you place the wager once and you're done. Win, and the profit is yours to withdraw immediately, no repeated wagering required to unlock it.
That structure makes bonus bets a genuinely good fit for a newer or smaller-stakes bettor. If you're not planning to wager heavily, a 1x-and-done token still gets you real value on a single bet with no ongoing commitment attached.

Bonus Bets vs. Deposit Match: Two Different Games
Deposit-match bonuses get lumped in with bonus bets in most people's heads, but the requirements differ completely. A deposit-match offer, where a book matches your deposit with bonus funds, typically comes with a rollover or playthrough requirement: a multiplier, often 3x, 5x, or 8x, applied to your deposit and bonus combined that you have to wager before withdrawing any of it. Deposit $250 into a 50% match offer with a 5x rollover, and you're on the hook for $1,875 in total wagers before that bonus becomes withdrawable cash.
Most books also cap the odds you can use to clear that requirement, frequently around -200 or longer, specifically to stop people from parking a near-lock bet and clearing their requirement with minimal risk.
The clock is also a real factor. 30 days is a common ceiling for meeting a rollover requirement, after which unused bonus funds and any progress toward the requirement can simply vanish. Some wager types, parlays and teasers among them, don't always count toward the total either, so read the fine print on what qualifies before assuming every bet is chipping away at the number.

Withdrawal Restrictions and the Stuff That Actually Trips People Up
The gap between "bonus bet balance" and "money you can actually withdraw" is where most confusion lives. Winnings from a bonus bet typically land as real, withdrawable cash since the stake itself was never yours to begin with, but deposit-match bonus winnings usually stay locked until the full rollover clears. Expiration windows on individual tokens run out quietly, often before a casual bettor even notices the countdown. None of this is hidden, exactly, but it's disclosed in terms every operator posts publicly, and it's written for compliance, not comprehension. Do most sportsbooks expect you to read the full terms and conditions for a given bonus? No, and honestly, neither do I. That's why I wrote this article.
Regulators have started treating this fine print as more than a formality, too. The Massachusetts Gaming Commission fined an operator $25,000 over its "Can't Lose Parlay" promotion in 2023, ruling that no wager marketed as risk-free actually is one. A 2024 Michigan Journal of Law Reform piece went further, arguing that "free bet" and "risk-free" language across the industry routinely misleads consumers about how bonus mechanics actually function. None of that makes these promos illegal or fake. It confirms that the gap between the headline and the terms is well documented enough to draw regulatory attention, not just a few annoyed forum posts.
Making Sense of Sportsbook Sign-up Terminology
| What the Ad Says | What It Sounds Like | What It Actually Means |
|---|---|---|
| Bet $5, Get $200 | $200 in your account instantly | Up to $200 split into smaller tokens, often staggered over 1-3 weeks, sometimes contingent on your first bet winning |
| Bonus Bet | Free money to bet with | Stake not returned; a winning bonus bet only pays the profit, not the token amount; typically a 1x playthrough, no rollover multiplier |
| Deposit Match | Extra cash added to your deposit | A real wagering multiplier, often 3x-8x on your deposit and bonus combined, before any of it becomes withdrawable |
| Odds Boost | Guaranteed better payout | Only a real edge if the boosted price beats the true no-vig market price, not just yesterday's number |
None of this means these offers are worthless. Quite the opposite. Instead, I'm suggesting that knowing exactly how they work and understanding the terms governing them can maximize your potential returns. Sure, "bet $5, get $200" isn't a recipe for free money, but it can still act as a meaningful discount on your first month of betting at sportsbooks.
