AI Best Bets: Another Bad Week. Can World Cup Right the Ship?

The AI betting experiment turns to the World Cup, NBA Finals, and Yankees baseball in search of a turnaround week.

We’re still not where we wanted to be with our AI best bets experiment, as the hot start for our AI bookmaker Perplexity has now transformed into a two-week skid.

We went 1-for-4 on our June 1–7 card. The NBA Finals Game 1 total hit under 217.5 instead of over. Jack Eichel didn't score in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final, and the MLB 2-leg parlay – which featured Guardians moneyline and Parker Messick over 6 strikeouts – flopped

We did hit the Stanley Cup Final Game 2 over 5.5 goals, so that was the only winner of the week.

After the rough week, we hoped to get back on track. We really didn't. But the timing is right for a reset. And the reset is bigger than just another side and a prop. The 2026 World Cup is rolling out, the NBA and NHL finals are still alive, and the Yankees are back in focus with Cam Schlittler on Saturday.

In our responsible gambling mindset, we’re not going to chase. We need to execute cleaner shots with better alignment. We can also clean up our prompts to Perp and really try to find the best analytics for individual bets.

And this week, we have a nice array of sports, particularly for a summer month, when baseball is often the only sport on the schedule.

It’s a good time to remember that soccer betting is a bit different than the core four major US sports.

World Cup: Mexico vs. South Africa

The World Cup is underway this week, and the first match pits Mexico against South Africa. And Perp expects a low-scoring match.

“This is the sharpest angle, and here's why: Mexico and South Africa met in the opening match of the 2010 World Cup, and that fixture produced under 2.5 goals in a tight, tense 1-1 draw. History shows that opening matches between these two nations are defensive and cautious.

“This is the lower-risk, structurally sound play. Mexico should win, but opening matches are often tight. The under gives you defensive value without relying on Mexico to score multiple goals.”

  • Bet: Under 2.5 goals

World Cup: USA vs. Paraguay

Perp likes how the USA honed up in the pre-tournament matches and its history against Paraguay.

“USA opened 2-1 in their last meeting with Paraguay in November 2025 at Subaru Park, and the USMNT has a 4-1-0 head-to-head record against Paraguay overall. ESPN shows USA at +105 ML, with the draw at +255 and Paraguay at +295. The data is clear: USA is the slight favorite, and the home-host crowd at SoFi Stadium gives them an edge.”

  • Bet: USA Moneyline

NBA Finals Game 4: Spurs vs. Knicks

Depending on how Game 3 goes at Madison Square Garden, the Knicks could be closing out a sweep at home in Game 4. With that in mind, Perp said the smart money is on the Knicks to win.

“This is the sharpest angle, and here's why: When a team goes up 3-0 in the NBA Finals, the home favorite is almost a guaranteed win to close it out.”

Plus, even if they lose Game 3, the Knicks will still be home favorites to take a 3-1 series lead.

  • Bet: Knicks Moneyline

NHL Finals Game 5: Vegas vs. Carolina

The Stanley Cup Final heads back to Carolina, and it could be Vegas up 3-1 or tied 2-2, depending on the Game 4 final in Vegas. Either way, Perp likes Carolina to win, as they are still the favorites to win the series.

“When a team is down 3-1 but gets back to home ice for Game 5, they're the value favorite.”

Perp also noted projected goals are 6.3, so an optional prop is over 5.5 goals.

  • Bet: Carolina Moneyline
  • Optional: Over 5.5 goals

MLB: Yankees vs. Blue Jays

Baseball has still been volatile despite clearing the early-season unknowns, but one thing has been solid all year: Yankees ace Cam Schlittler. So I had Perp go back to him.

“Cam Schlittler is the cleanest tried-and-true winner for the Yankees on Saturday. Schlittler over strikeouts will be the best straight bet.”

  • Bet: Schlittler over strikeouts

The Key Takeaways

This week is about trying to reset the process after two straight bad weeks. We’re sticking to straight bets that really seem solid and based on results.

We're executing cleaner shots with better alignment: World Cup first matches, finals trends, and Schlittler's strikeouts.

Let's get right to this week.
