The 2026-27 NBA regular season is here, which means it’s time to find out which of the offseason blockbuster moves were the best. Most of the summer talk centered around trying to figure out LeBron James’ next team.

While it’s easy to say James signing with the Philadelphia 76ers was by far the biggest headline, it was an NBA offseason highlighted by a lot of wheeling and dealing. Giannis Antetokounmpo is now in South Beach and Kawhi Leonard has returned to Toronto.

We will find out over the next several months which moves will have the biggest impact on the NBA championship picture. For now, we rank the top-five transactions heading into the regular season.

Criteria For Ranking The Best Transactions

Evaluating moves based on superstar names might make headlines, but this was only a small factor that we considered when compiling this top-five list. The price paid, roster implications, cap flexibility, and the team’s improved championship chances are what will truly separate the great moves from the mediocre ones.

Ranking The Top 5 NBA Offseason Moves

Kawhi Leonard playing for the Toronto Rapters

5. Leonard Returns To Toronto

This transaction lost some of its luster as a result of the Clippers and Leonard being severely penalized for violating the salary cap circumvention rules. Once the dust settled, the Raptors landed Leonard in exchange for a package that included Gradey Dick, Brandon Ingram, along with first-round picks in 2031 and 2033.

On paper, the move gives Toronto fans something to get excited about being that Leonard was the star player on the Raptors 2019 championship team. One of the big unknowns is whether or not Leonard can stay healthy, given that he hasn’t played more than 68 regular-season games during his six seasons in L.A.

Victor Wembanyama holding the ball for the San Antonio Spurs

4. Spurs Get Hometown Wemby Discount

The San Antonio Spurs are one of the teams that could legitimately end the league’s current parity trend that has seen eight different teams win the Larry O’Brien Trophy over the last eight seasons. Victor Wembanyama has transformed the Spurs from a perennial lottery team into a championship contender, leading San Antonio to the 2026 NBA Finals. San Antonio is well aware that Wemby gives them the best chance of winning multiple league titles. The reigning Defensive Player of the Year was rewarded with a five-year extension that could exceed $250 million. Wembanyama could’ve signed a $300M-plus deal, but the hometown discount gives his Spurs cap flexibility.

Looking at NBA betting futures, San Antonio and Oklahoma City Thunder open the season as the co-favorites (+270). If Wemby and company end up winning two or more championships, then this one will go down as a very good deal.

LaMelo Ball

3. Ball, Edwards Now Timberwolves Teammates

The Minnesota Timberwolves are one of those franchises still chasing that first NBA Finals appearance. After the T-Wolves were eliminated in the second round, Minnesota’s front office decided to shake things up via a four-team trade with the Charlotte Hornets, Brooklyn Nets, and Chicago Bulls. The deal included several moving parts, but the fact that the Timberwolves landed guard LaMelo Ball could produce major returns.

Ball, in six seasons with the Hornets, has averaged 20.8 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 7.3 assists in 31.0 minutes per game. If Ball and Edwards can stay healthy, a strong argument can be made that the T-Wolves have one of the league’s top backcourts. Over the last three seasons, Edwards has averaged over 25 points, 5 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game. Both players are under contract through the 2028-29 season at more than $40 million per year.

Come June, we will see if this is the trade that helps the Timberwolves finally make the NBA Finals.

Giannis Antetokounmpo playing for the Miami Heat

2. Heat land Antetokounmpo in six-player deal

Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks finally went their separate ways as the two-time league MVP was the headliner in a massive six-player deal that also included four draft picks and a pick swap. The Heat added Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis while the Bucks received a package that includes Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakučionis, and the No. 13 pick in 2026, first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, a 2030 first-round swap, and a 2033 second-round pick.

Since winning the 2021 NBA title, Milwaukee has not advanced beyond the second round. It went 32-50 last season. Miami has been in a similar boat over the last three seasons. Antetokounmpo is under contract for $58.4 million and has a $62.8 million player option for the following year. Will he pick up that player option or will the Heat give the 10-time NBA All-Star a massive new deal?

The answer to that question will determine how big this trade ends up being. However, the idea of seeing Antetokounmpo  (27. 6 PPG, 9.8 RPG, and 5.4 APG) and Bam Adebayo (20.1 PPG and 10 RPG) playing together generates some fresh buzz in South Beach.

1.  76ers Overhaul Roster With LeBron James, Jaylen Brown

Since Philadelphia drafted Joel Embiid No. 3  overall in the 2014 NBA Draft, the team has yet to make the Eastern Conference Finals. After getting eliminated by the Knicks in the 2026 NBA Playoffs, there was a sense that major changes were coming. Little did anybody realize that the to-do list was going to include getting Jaylen Brown from the rival Boston Celtics for George and four draft picks.

Then came the even bigger news that James would be signing for the veteran minimum (two-year, $8 million) with Philadelphia. The fact that Embiid, Brown, and Tyrese Maxey are all signed through 2028-29 means that the possibility of contending for multiple championships is real.

Once the Philly front office was done wheeling and dealing, the 76ers saw their championship odds go from +6000 all the way down to +1000, according to BetMGM odds.

Which NBA Offseason Move Will Be The Biggest?

It’s easy to say that James signing with Philadelphia is the biggest move, given that he is one of the greatest basketball players ever. The fact that the 76ers dedicated the offseason to building one of the league’s deepest rosters is the real story, and oddsmakers now see Philly as a legitimate threat to win it all.

Wemby staying put in San Antonio and Antetokounmpo arriving in Miami are expected to deliver significant results as well.

Now that the NBA regular season is here, the time for speculation is over.
