How can we help?
Why is the software running slow?
If the software runs very slow and constantly crashes, the problem might be linked to DNS. A simple procedure like changing DNS will bring you many benefits; like a faster connection, safer browsing and much more privacy.
Here we show you how to change the DNS of your computer:
Windows XP
- Click on the "Start" button and open the "Control Panel". Click on "Network Connections" and open it. If you don't see icons in the upper left corner, there is an option called "Switch to classic view".
- The "Properties" screen will open for your main Internet connection. In your system, it can be a dial-up connection, a DSL connection, a cable connection, etc. Right-click on the icon to access the menu and click on the "Properties" option.
- Then the "Connection Properties" window will open. Scroll down the screen until the "Internet Protocol (TCP / IP)" option appears. Do not click "Check Box" as this will disable this protocol. When the protocol is highlighted, click the "Properties" button. This will open a dialog for "Internet Protocol (TCP / IP) Properties".
- You're almost done! If the "Obtain DNS server automatically" section is in use, you should change it to "Use the following DNS server addresses". Enter 8.8.8.8 as the primary address and 8.8.4.4 as the secondary address.
- Click "OK" until all dialog boxes are closed. Done! Your DNS has been changed.
Windows 7
- Go to the "Control Panel".
- Click on "Network and Internet", in the network center click on "change adapter settings".
- Select the connection for which you want to configure Google's public DNS. Example:
To change the settings for an Ethernet connection, right-click on Local Area Connection and then Properties. To change the settings for a wireless connection, right-click Wireless Network Connection and then Properties.
If it asks for an administrator password or confirmation, enter the password or provide the confirmation. - Click on "Network" and select "Internet Protocol version 4 (TCP / IPv4)" or "Internet Protocol version 6 (TCP / IPv6)" and click on "Properties".
- Click on "Advanced" and select the "DNS" tab. If any DNS server IP address appears, write it down for future reference and remove it from that window. Now click "OK".
- Select "Use the following DNS server addresses". If there are IP addresses listed on the preferred DNS server or on the alternate DNS server, please write them down for future reference. Replace these addresses with the IP addresses of Google's DNS servers:
For IPv4: 8.8.8.8 (main) and 8.8.4.4. (High school)
For IPv6: 2001: 4860: 4860 :: 8888 (primary) and (secondary) 2001: 4860: 4860 :: 8844
When in doubt, just change the IPv4 address. Very few people use IPv6. - Restart the connection selected in step 3.
Mac OS X
- From the Apple menu, click "System Preferences" and then "Network".
- If the padlock in the lower corner of the window is locked, click the icon to make changes, and when prompted to authenticate, enter your password.
- Select the connection for which you want to configure Google's public DNS. For example:
To change the settings for an Ethernet connection (also known as 'wired'), select Integrated Ethernet and click Advanced.
To change the settings for a wireless connection, select Airport and click Advanced Properties. (In the latest versions of OS X, ‘Airport’ is replaced by 'WiFi'). - Select the "DNS" tab.
- Click on "+" to replace the listed addresses or add Google IP addresses to the top of the list:
For IPv4: 8.8.8.8 and / or 8.8.4.4.
For IPv6: 2001: 4860: 4860 :: 8888 and / or 2001: 4860: 4860 :: 8844
When in doubt, just change the IPv4 address. Very few people use IPv6. - Click "Apply" and then "OK".
